Analysis of lower urinary tract symptoms between BPH and prostate cancer patients

Abstract
Purpose: We evaluated the differences of lower urinary tract symptoms between BPH and prostate cancer.

Materials and Methods: Between January 2013 and December 2013, 211 patients performed prostate biopsy were analyzed retrospectively.

Results: Total 211 patients were performed prostate biopsy, 63 patients (29.9%) were diagnosed to prostate cancer and 148 patients (70.1%) were diagnosed to BPH. The prostate size were 35.46 ¡¾ 18.91 cc in prostate cancer and 43.05 ¡¾ 24.22 cc in BPH patients, the prostate size of BPH patients was significantly larger than prostate cancer (p=0.028). In International Prostatic Symptom Score, BPH patients checked high discomfort score compared to prostate cancer patients in question number 5 and 6. However, except question 5 and 6, there were no differences of other lower urinary tract symptoms between two groups.

Conclusions: BPH patients have more severe obstructive symptoms compared to prostate cancer. And there were no differences of other lower urinary tract symptoms between two groups. But, larger scale study is necessary to consolidate this study due to small patients.
